Rhiwbina homes and their wiring

Rhiwbina has two distinct housing stocks. The Garden Village, laid out from 1912 in the Arts and Crafts style, is a conservation area of cottages and small houses with low ceilings, tight lofts and a character the residents work hard to keep. Around it is a much larger spread of interwar and post-war semis and detached houses.

In the Garden Village the work is often about fitting modern circuits into small, finished rooms without spoiling them: routing through lofts and under floors, and keeping anything new on the outside of the building discreet. In the 1930s semis the classic job is a house whose wiring has been extended piecemeal for decades — a rear extension here, a loft room there — until nobody quite knows which circuit feeds what.

Both tend to come back from an EICR with the same kind of findings: older consumer units without RCD protection for every circuit, and additions that were reasonable when done but would not be done that way now.

What we are asked to do in Rhiwbina

  • Consumer unit upgrades, after a proper look at the circuits behind the board rather than a swap on its own.
  • Rewires and partial rewires timed with kitchen, bathroom and loft projects, when the floors are already up.
  • EV chargers on driveways, and mains interlinked smoke alarms for families and landlords alike.

Every job is certified, and anything notifiable is notified through our scheme so you get the building regulations compliance certificate. The Welsh rules on that are not the same as England's — see what electrical work needs signing off in Wales.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

My house is in the Garden Village conservation area. Does that change the electrics?

Not the electrical rules, which are the same everywhere in Wales. It does affect anything visible outside, such as a charge point, solar panels or a new meter box on the front of the house, so check with Cardiff Council before committing to those.

My 1930s semi has had several extensions. Do I need a full rewire?

Not necessarily. An EICR tells you the condition of each circuit, and it is common for a house like that to need some circuits replaced and others left alone. We would rather test first than quote a full rewire on age alone.

Do you cover Pantmawr and Thornhill too?

Yes, along with the rest of north Cardiff. See our Whitchurch, Llanishen and Birchgrove pages for those areas.
