Canton homes and their wiring

Canton is long Victorian terraces either side of Cowbridge Road East, and Pontcanna next to it has larger Victorian houses, many of them divided into flats. It is one of the parts of Cardiff where the private rented sector is biggest, and the electrics reflect it: installations that have been altered by a succession of owners and landlords, flats sharing a building with separate supplies, and consumer units of every age.

Terraces here are typically wired on a familiar pattern — a board by the front door or under the stairs, upstairs and downstairs lighting and socket circuits, and a kitchen at the back that has been extended at least once. The kitchen is where most of the findings sit, and in Wales new work in a kitchen is still notifiable, so it is worth getting right.

Converted flats bring their own questions: where each flat's supply and meter actually are, what is landlord's supply versus tenant's, and how a smoke alarm system should work in a building with several households.

What we are asked to do in Canton

  • EICRs, remedial work and mains interlinked alarms for landlords and letting agents.
  • Rewires of terraced houses, often timed between tenancies or with a new kitchen.
  • Fault finding on circuits that trip, especially on older split-load boards.

Every job is certified, and anything notifiable is notified through our scheme so you get the building regulations compliance certificate. The Welsh rules on that are not the same as England's — see what electrical work needs signing off in Wales.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you work around tenants?

Yes. An EICR or a small job can be booked around the household, and we will tell you in advance which parts of the day the power will be off. Rewires are best done between tenancies.

My kitchen extension was done years ago with no paperwork. Is that a problem?

It often comes up on a sale. An EICR will tell you the condition of the wiring as it is now; that is a different document from a building regulations certificate for the original work, and one does not replace the other.

Do you work on shops along Cowbridge Road?

Our work is mostly domestic and small commercial. Ring with the details and we will tell you straight away whether it is something we can take on.
