Outdoor electrics in Barry: what needs notifying
A garden socket, a hot tub supply, outside lighting, a summer-house feed or an EV charge point on the drive are all notifiable work in Wales. That is the part people are most often surprised by, because England took outdoor work off its notifiable list in 2013 and Wales did not. The gov.wales guidance still reads "except in a kitchen or bathroom, or outdoors".
It matters in practice rather than on paper. Notifiable work has to be either self-certified by a registered electrician, who then issues you a building regulations compliance certificate within 30 days, or notified to the Vale of Glamorgan Council in advance by you, with a fee attached. We are registered, so the certificate comes from us and there is nothing for you to file.
Outdoor circuits also have to survive weather that indoor ones never see. Sockets and isolators need an enclosure rated for their position, buried cable needs the right depth and mechanical protection, and an EV point needs its own correctly earthed arrangement rather than a spur off something convenient. Getting that wrong is rarely obvious on the day — it shows up a winter or two later.
